Katee Sackhoff gun safety tweet loses actress half of her followers
“Please practice gun safety. This is horrible!” That was tweeted by actress Katee Sackhoff in response to a recent Arizona incident. The incident involved a 4-year-old who fatally shot his father with an unlocked handgun. The innocent reminder cost Katee half her Twitter following.
The post resulted in a lot of activity on the actress’s page. One follower wrote “Here’s a radical idea folks. How about NO gun?” Another jumped to the conclusion that Katee was advocating automatic weapons. Others defended the actress and her point of view.
Katee tried to maintain a reasonable tone. In a show of consideration for opposition, Katee tweeted “There are many safe homes with guns & kids in them. I’ve grown up around them for hunting & NEVER handled one without an adult. It’s about safety, education, and loving & listening to our children. There are so many reasons why guns are scary but there are so many reasons they are part of our world & lives. There is no easy answer here that will satisfy everyone.”
Katee’s followers fell to about 98,000 before rebounding back to 130,000. This rebound was largely the result of Twitter users who hadn’t been following the actress beginning to do so as an expression of support for her standing her ground in the debate.
As the dust settled and the discussion came to the close, Katee expressed her opinion on the matter one more time: “Well I guess I just learned talking about #GunSafety inspires a massive debate. Pro-Gun or Anti-Gun SAFETY should be unanimous!”
